Patient Stories: Leydi

Victor and Teresa were not able to have children. They tried for years to no avail until they found a physician in Chiclayo who was able fulfill their only desire left in their lives: to have their first baby boy. They were elated at his miraculous birth because they never dreamt of having another child.

Four years after the birth of their first baby boy, Teresa began to get ill. She consulted many physicians, none of whom were able to pinpoint her problem. It took her astute OBGYN physician to she was pregnant. The UltraSound showed that their baby girl had a cleft lip. They were perplexed because to their knowledge, no one on either side of their family ever had cleft-lip.

Leydi was a beautiful baby girl, but there was a problem, Teresa was not able to breast feed as she not producing milk and infants with cleft lips needed a special type of feeding bottle, a type not available in Chiclayo. Meanwhile, the family and physicians were trying to think of a way to correct young Leydi’s cleft lip.

Victor worked for a printing press. His company was in charge of designing banners for ES SALUD Hospitals in Peru. One day he received a fax from EL SALUD Hospital in Trujillo. The letter stated that the Global Smile Foundation would have a surgical team in Trujillo in several weeks. He was to be in charge of the banners which would be distributed in Chiclayo. It seemed like another miracle. When he heard this he said “That day was the happiest day of my entire life”

Leydi was three months old when she was able to finally get her surgery. Her parents said, “You gave her this beautiful smile, and made us smile even bigger seeing the joy in her face.” They hoped that the team would continue to do life-changing work to help children around the world.
