Our Guayaquil Story

Located on the Guayas River near the Pacific Ocean, Guayaquil is Ecuador’s main port and economic capital. Although it is the most populous city with nearly 2.3 million people, access to proper medical care is very limited. Global Smile Foundation (GSF) volunteers have been involved with outreach cleft programs in Guayaquil for the past 32 years. GSF has become the largest provider of cleft care in the country and works closely with el Gobierno del Guayas, Hospital León Becerra, Fundación Global Smile-Ecuador, and the local medical community.

Established in 1905, Hospital León Becerra is dedicated to pediatric care for children and families of low socioeconomic status. The hospital is managed by the Benemérita Sociedad Protectora de la Infancia, an institution devoted to serving the children of Guayaquil.

GSF is grateful to Prefecto Carlos Luis Morales for his support of our outreach cleft programs and comprehensive cleft care in the Guayas and Ecuador. Gobierno del Guayas is our long-term partner and has been critical to the success of our outreach cleft programs and comprehensive cleft care in Ecuador.

In 2012 Fundación Global Smile Ecuador was  founded  to ensure the sustainability of GSF’s humanitarian work. In the same year, GSF launched the first advanced training program in NasoAlveolar Molding (NAM) therapy in outreach settings based in Guayaquil, Ecuador. This training supports ongoing efforts to provide comprehensive and multi-disciplinary cleft care year-round and empowers and sustains local healthcare capacity through educational programs.

In 2014, GSF opened a Comprehensive Cleft Care Center at Hospital León Becerra de Guayaquil to provide year-round comprehensive cleft care. The center is managed by Fundación Global Smile Ecuador.

As GSF and Fundación Global Smile Ecuador have grown, so has the awareness of our humanitarian cleft care outreach programs. To meet the needs of the patient population, GSF added a second annual mission trip in 2016. In July 2019, GSF added a third annual mission.
