Our Guayaquil Story

Guayaquil is Ecuador’s largest city, main port, and economic capital. It is also the capital of Guayas Province and gateway to the Galapagos Islands. Although it has a population of over 2.5 million people, access to medical care is very limited. GSF has become the largest provider of cleft care in the country and works closely with Hospital León Becerra, Prefecto Jimmy Jairala and La Prefectura del Guayas, the Global Smile Fundacion-Ecuador, and the local medical community. In response to the cleft care needed, GSF now conducts two mission trips to Guayaquil every year and each trip is 3 weeks long.

Hospital León Becerra

Established in 1905, Hospital León Becerra (HLB) is dedicated to pediatric care for children and families of low socioeconomic status. HLB is managed by the Benemérita Sociedad Protectora de la Infancia, an institution devoted to serving the children of Guayaquil. GSF and León Becerra have been a strong team since 2012.

Fundacion Global Smile-Ecuador was founded in 2012 to ensure the sustainability of GSF’s humanitarian work here. Fundacion Global Smile-Ecuador volunteers are our family in Guayaquil. We work together as a committed team, providing urgently needed care for the patients who need us most.

Prefecto Jimmy Jairala has been a committed supporter of Global Smile Foundation’s humanitarian cleft missions to Guayaquil. Since his first year in office, Prefecto Jimmy Jairala committed his support to GSF and our humanitarian cleft missions in Guayas. During our September 2016 mission, he expressed his hope that Global Smile would continue to come to Guayaquil twice a year.
