Our Guayaquil Story
Located on the Guayas River near the Pacific Ocean, Guayaquil is Ecuador’s main port and economic capital. Although it is the most populous city with nearly 2.3 million people, access to proper medical care is very limited. Global Smile Foundation (GSF) volunteers have been involved with outreach cleft programs in Guayaquil for the past 33 years.
GSF has become the largest provider of cleft care in the country and works closely with el Gobierno del Guayas, Hospital León Becerra, Fundación Global Smile-Ecuador, and the local medical community.
GSF is grateful to the Gobierno del Guayas for their partnership and support that has been critical to the success of our outreach cleft programs and comprehensive cleft care in Ecuador.
In 2012 Fundación Global Smile Ecuador was founded to ensure the sustainability of GSF’s humanitarian work. In the same year, GSF launched the first advanced training program in NasoAlveolar Molding (NAM) therapy in outreach settings based in Guayaquil, Ecuador. This training supports ongoing efforts to provide comprehensive and multi-disciplinary cleft care year-round and empowers and sustains local healthcare capacity through educational programs.
Also in 2012, GSF opened a Comprehensive Cleft Care Center at Hospital León Becerra de Guayaquil to provide year-round comprehensive cleft care. The center is managed by Fundación Global Smile-Ecuador.
As GSF and Fundación Global Smile-Ecuador have grown, so has the awareness of our humanitarian cleft care outreach programs. To meet the needs of the patient population, GSF added a second annual mission trip in 2016 and a third annual mission 2019.
