Kawthar’s family fled the war in Syria and sought refuge in Lebanon. Despite multiple ultrasounds, Kawthar’s mother did not know that her daughter would be born with cleft. It was challenging for her parents to learn how to care for her, but they were fortunate to receive unconditional support from their families. After meeting another patient treated by Global Smile Foundation, they reached out to us. Kawthar underwent her first lip repair surgery in 2022 and cleft palate surgery in 2023. Since then, she has had dental care, speech therapy, and psychosocial support. We are so glad to see her grow up with a healthy smile, thanks to support from our donors and sponsors.
What is a Cleft Hero?
We believe that children born with cleft lip/palate are heroes! Our patients often face numerous challenges with eating, health issues, and discrimination. Plus, coming to the hospital for surgery and other cleft care can be scary. We are always impressed with the resilience and bravery that our patients show, and we think they are true heroes.
