Macapá is a large city located near the mouth of the Amazon River that serves as the economic hub of the state of Amapá, Brazil. It has few roads and is better accessed by land or sea. The Global Smile Foundation team first collaborated with São Camilo Hospital in 2016 where they found the need for cleft care is great.

Dakar and Thies, Senegal
Senegal has a large number of underserved cleft patients. Although the incidence of clefts in Africa is not as high as in some other continents, the number of patients who did not undergo cleft repair is quite high due to the lack of financial resources and nationwide healthcare system that allows the rendering of such care.

Abidjan, Ivory Coast
In 2012, GSF partnered with West African sponsor, FATOM, who has non-profit activities including education and health care throughout several West African countries and has been a generous sponsor of GSF on its previous missions to Burkina Faso and Senegal.

Bamako, Mali
Mali the largest country in West Africa, is famous for its vibrant music and is considered one of Africa’s liveliest intellectual centers. Unfortunately, its health and development indicators are among the worst in the world. Poverty, malnutrition, and inadequate sanitation continue to put the population at risk for various health problems. The capital city, Bamako, is currently estimated to be the fastest growing city in Africa. The Global Smile Foundation has completed two successful missions to Mali, operating out of Gabriel Toure Hospital in Bamako.

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso has thousands of unrepaired cleft cases, similar to other African countries in the region. Due to the lack of resources, skills, and funding, many go their entire lives without receiving any sort of treatment for this common birth defect. In 2013, GSF partnered with West African sponsor, FATOM, who has non-profit activities including education and health care throughout several West African countries and has been a generous sponsor of GSF on its previous missions to Ivory Coast and Senegal.

Beirut, Lebanon
Beirut is Lebanon's seat of government and plays a central role in the Lebanese economy, with many banks and corporations based in its city center. GSF completed its first mission to Beirut in May 2012 and continues to provide comprehensive cleft care to the large population of underserved patients.

GSF partnered with T.E.S.S. Unlimited and Hospitalito Atitlan in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala. Alan Silverstein and numerous other individual and corporate sponsors generously sponsored the mission.

95% of the children born with cleft deformities in El Salvador live in impoverished conditions. They cannot afford, access, and often do not attempt to receive cleft treatment. Hospital Nacional de Niños Benjamin Bloom of San Salvador, El Salvador is the only hospital that treats children with clefts.

Guayaquil is Ecuador's main port and is also the largest city in the country. It has a population of over 3 million people, yet access to medical care is very limited. GSF has run all of its successful missions in collaboration with Hospital Leon Becerra.

Trujillo, Peru
Located on the northwestern coast of Peru, Trujillo is the capital of the La Libertad region and the third most populous city in the country. At the foothills of the Andes mountains, this area of the country lacks access to surgical care and there are many patients in need of comprehensive cleft care.

Esmeraldas, Ecuador
Esmeraldas is a costal city in northwest Ecuador and is an important seaport for the country. This was GSF’s first mission to Esmeraldas, Ecuador. GSF collaborated with the Ecuadorian Navy during the mission. Hospital Naval provides services for the Ecuadorian Navy as well as dedicates their resources to underserved patients in the area.

GSF completed its 1st mission to Beirut, Lebanon from April 27-May 11, 2012, sponsored by The Talia Foundation. GSF partnered with American University of Beirut Medical Center for surgical procedures and a series of educational lectures. The purpose of GSF’s first mission was to deliver a series of lectures and operate on a small number of patients, paving the way for future missions to Lebanon.
